Looking for a gentle giant? The Pacu is a peaceful, plant-loving freshwater fish that’s often mistaken for a piranha at first glance — but don’t worry, these guys are friendly! With their flat bodies, human-like teeth (yes, really!), and calm temperament, pacus make a striking and unusual addition to large home aquariums or indoor fish ponds.
Pacus can grow quite large — up to 12 to 30 inches depending on the species — so they need a very spacious tank to swim freely and stay healthy. They’re social and usually do best in pairs or small groups with other peaceful fish of similar size.
Unlike their carnivorous cousins, pacus are mostly herbivores and enjoy a diet of vegetables, fruits, and quality pellets. Just be careful with live plants — they’re snack material!
