These fish are air-breathing and can be found in slow-flowing rivers and swamps, often among reeds.

They are native to Central America and thrive in tropical freshwater environments with a temperature range of 18-25°C (64-77°F). Platies are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs.
