Appearance:
Five star fish have a moderately compressed body with a straw brown to tan base color, often adorned with red pigment and bright blue spots. They typically have three dark spots on their sides: one on the gill cover, one in the middle of the body, and one at the base of the tail.

They can grow up to 15 cm (6 in) long.

They are omnivorous and will eat a variety of foods including flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live foods.

They are found in shallow waters of ponds, creeks, canals, and drainage ditches, often near aquatic vegetation.

Breeding:
Jewel fish are cave breeders and can be very aggressive towards other fish, especially during the breeding season and while rearing their fry.
- Tank Size: A minimum of 100 cm (39 in) tank is recommended for a pair.
- Aggression: They are known for their territorial and aggressive behavior, making them unsuitable for typical community aquariums.
- Compatibility: It is advisable to keep them in a separate tank if you want to keep a pair.
