Tetras generally have compressed (sometimes deep), fusiform bodies and are typically identifiable by their fins. They ordinarily possess a homo cercal caudal fin (a twin-lobed, or forked, tail fin whose upper and lower lobes are of equal size) and a tall dorsal fin characterized by a short connection to the fish’s body.
- Appearance: They have a streamlined body shape and a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins. A prominent dark stripe runs horizontally along their body.
- Size: They typically reach a length of about 4.5 cm.
- Habitat: They are found in rivers and streams of Africa, preferring areas with moderate currents.
- Temperament: One-line tetras are peaceful and thrive in groups, making them excellent additions to community tanks.
- Care: They are relatively easy to care for, preferring a well-planted aquarium with moderate lighting and stable water parameters.
- Diet: They are omnivores, enjoying a varied diet of high-quality flakes, small live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia.
- Compatibility: They are compatible with other peaceful community fish of similar size.
